Gugulethu Sophie Mbatha - better called Gugu - is a British stage actress and film actor. Her fame was boosted by her role in BBC's 'Doctor Who', a British science fiction television series. Gugu scored a huge hit in the series as Tish Jones. Tish is the sister of Martha Jones. Gugu was a lively, spontaneous personality that was loved by all who saw her. Handler's mother was a domestic worker and her father was employed as a used-car dealer. Her mother, who was a German Immigrant in the United States since 1958, was born in Germany. After more than ten years fight against breast cancer, she passed away in the year 1989. Handler's father was Jewish and she was raised within Reform Judaism. Handler enjoyed a pleasant and healthy childhood growing up in an affluent community. She moved to Los Angeles when she was aged 19 to pursue acting. Handler started acting in order to make money. Handler aged at the age of 21, decided to focus on stand-up comedy as a full-time occupation following her discovery of storytelling. Handler's professional career started as part of the all-female Oxygen TV show in the hidden camera/practical comedy reality show Girls Behaving Unstably. From 2002 to 2005, the show was aired. Handler began appearing on various other programs such like Weekends at D.L., The Bernie Mac Show, The Practice and My Wife and Kids. Handler was also a the correspondent for The Tonight Show. Handler's big break was in 2006 when she began hosting her show on E! The Chelsea Handler Program. The show ran for two seasons. The following year, Handler performed on the Comedy Central's Hour Stand-Up Comedy Tour in the United States. Her stand-up performances have been aired by VH1, Comedy Central's Premium Blend and HBO. In 2010, it was announced that she would host the MTV Video Music Awards 2010. She became the second woman in the history of television, after Roseanne Barr, to host the VMAs.
